Millimetre were commissioned by Rother District Council to undertake the construction of 4 shelters along the Bexhill seafront close to the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill, East Sussex.

Designed by Duggan Morris Architects the shelters are steel framed wooden clad units that Millimetre fabricated from Kebony - pine and southern yellow pine, a durable tropical hardwood substitute.

The steel subrame is zinc coated and where exposed to the coastal elements a bronze aluminium coating has been applied. Each shelter incorporates a toughened glass panel on its south westerly aspect to protect from the prevailing winds.

The shelters were fully fabricated off site and transported to location with heavy plant hire. The 8 tonne structures were lowered and secured onto 28 holding down bolts.

The shelters were the result of a competition run by RIBA and the resulting architecture was selected from 140 initial entries.
