We worked closely with Make Architects developing the aesthetic and exploring construction techniques for this bespoke staircase. We developed the geometry in Rhino and rendered up visualisations based upon the approved materials and finishes.
The forming of the pierced inner stringer and the copper cladding /spraying threw up several technical challenges testing our skill, our tools and those of our specialist subcontractors
The pierced hand finished helically rolled inner stringer is hot metal sprayed [copper] acid patinated and hard waxed. The Oak handrail produced using a 5 axis router using data from our model.
The steel outer stringer is clad in 3mm copper with welded seams, the balustrade is 12mm thick curved low iron glass with a baked Oak handrail. The convex spiralling soffit is composed of a timber lattice with a polished plaster finish.
