Space Garden
Heatherwick studio
Scale model for Heatherwick Studio and Aurelia Institute, Biennale Architettura 2025 curated by Carlo Ratti. Complex form made by hand.
Millimetre were asked to fabricate a large sculptural model of Heatherwick Studio’s Space Garden, a habitat of 31 chambers exploring how plant life might thrive beyond Earth. The ambition was to make something beautiful and functional, using sustainable materials rather than relying on fully digital or 3D-printed production.

We introduced boatbuilding methods to form thin layers of plywood, combined with seven axis milling of solid poplar and selective 3D printing for the most complex parts. Early accuracy came from extensive digital testing, followed by multiple prototypes of the conical forms. Andy led this work in the workshop, refining forming techniques until the quality was right.

Consistency was maintained through clear standards and a focused team. Almost every part of the structure required careful alignment and material control.

Installed in Venice, the model sat confidently within the exhibition. Its craft and precision were immediately evident. The project strengthened our ongoing relationship with Heatherwick Studio and demonstrated how ambitious ideas can be realised through collaboration, precision and patience.
