Alex Chinneck – Knotted Lampposts
Knotted Sculptural Street Art Lampposts for Alex Chinneck
Assembly, Bristol. UK
November 2024
millimetre have technically designed and fabricated two cast knotted lampposts for a street art installation by sculptor Alex Chinneck outside the Assembly Rooms in Bristol.
The series of twisted lamp posts are formed of cast and rolled elements. Designed with a very discrete floor spigot and working illumination. They consist of a ‘normal’ straight lamp post to set the scene, followed by two pairs of knotted posts within a new public square set on the riverbank adjacent to Temple Bridge.
The rolled parts are broken down and individually formed from nineteen separate rolled sections, in addition to the separately cast knot components. All of the sculptures have been finished to appear as continuously twisting seamless lamp necks.
Working from original 3D models supplied by Alex millimetre refined them to include structuring all the rolled parts into radiuses for rolling. Allwick Patterns developed the cast elements to create patterns ready for casting in aluminum and iron. The completed lamp posts have a hard wearing zinc sprayed finish.
