Coventry Visitor Information Pod

Self contained visitor information centre for Coventry City of Culture with Creative Giants

Coventry, UK

August 2021

Commissioned as part of the celebration of the 2021 City of Culture is a self-contained Visitor Information Pod located directly outside Coventry Railway Station. It is formed of a core timber structure enclosed by a steel framework clad in decorative perforated iridescent panels.

Passing through the layered spruce ply portico entrance, visitors enter an octagonal space fully lined in birch plywood and are welcomed by staff at a bespoke reception desk. Public can also communicate with staff through serving windows in the sides of the structure that are concealed behind lockable shutters when not in use. The staff have a Kitchen, WC and Store room back of house spaces that contain all the facilities for the Pod to operate and include water, heating, electrics and communication.

The octagonal structure was fully prefabricated in the workshop in two halves to allow for transport to site where it was craned into position at night, bolted together and fully weatherproofed. The exterior cladding is made up of 120 individual laser cut panels which are powder coated in an iridescent finish and are riveted to 8 structural steel frames to create the decorative faceted facade.
