Local Motion
Local Motion for Studio of Cinematic Architecture
Leigh Sports Village Stadium. Wigan
July 2013
Local Motion is the first piece of interactive public art to be installed in the borough of Wigan. The artwork was commissioned by Wigan Council, developed and fabricated by Millimetre. Two undulating benches flank the entrance plaza infront of Leigh Sports Village Stadium.
The profile of each bench was created by tracking the trajectory of the knees and ankles of local students running toward the stadium. When people pass between the benches at night, the running movement is recalled in an animated sequence of light along each bench. The benches are formed from lazer profiled and rolled stainless steel with a custom LED installation.
