Heatherwick Pavilion Restoration

The Pavilion Restoration Project with Heatherwick Studio

Heatherwick Studios. Kings Cross. London

October 2023

Heatherwick Studio contacted millimetre to restore the sculptural pavilion Thomas Heatherwick created whilst a student of three-dimensional design at Manchester Polytechnic University. The small wood, metal and plastic pavilion was inspired by a collapsing farm building.

The piece that has been installed at Cass Sculpture Park and Chatworth House, required refinishing and realigning due to being outside for over 10 years.

millimetre closely consulted with Heatherwick Studio on all improvements to preserve the integrity of the original build. The pavilion was exceptionally significant to Thomas Heatherwick’s professional journey and ambition. A number of meticulous steps were taken in the restoration of this historic structure.

Aluminium frame was restored, maintaining the makers marks and the structure was realigned. Curved UV resistant polycarbonate panels were replaced, with a like for like to the original spec. Each panel was scribed to improve the sweep of the curving glazing lines. Bespoke rubber seals were prototyped and extruded to seal each curved panel. Bespoke washers were prototyped before sand casting from aluminium.

Each washer was dipped with a rubberised finish to merge with the extrusion. Doors were replaced and re-hung to improve the opening, with bespoke doorstops and new oak handles. The floor structure was replaced and reinforced to take a new carpet.
