Knotted Lampposts
Alex Chinneck
Knotted Sculptural Street Art Lampposts for Alex Chinneck. Streetlight with a twist.

The lampposts needed to read as ordinary street furniture at first glance, then slowly reveal something unexpected. The illusion had to hold in full public view.

Nothing could feel decorative or exaggerated. They needed to function as lighting, sit convincingly in the square, and withstand daily use.

We developed three posts as a single family. One remains straight, establishing the reference point. Two are knotted, their forms distorted without breaking continuity. Each uses the same base and lantern head so the shift feels subtle, not theatrical.

The challenge was making rolled and cast metal read as one continuous form. Decisions were made early about what could be rolled and what had to be cast, balancing cost, structure, and surface quality. Patterns were developed with seamless transitions in mind. Texture was carried across every section so joints disappeared and the geometry stayed believable.

In the workshop, Phil led the fabrication with close attention to alignment and flow. When adjustments were needed, sections were cut, rotated, and reworked until the form felt resolved. That willingness to refine is part of how we work.

The lampposts now stand as part of a wider group of public works in the square. Their success lies in restraint. The forms feel light, playful, and complete. The execution has led to further commissions, building a growing body of work developed through shared standards and trust.
