Selfridges Information Desk
Al-Jawad Pike Architects
In Collaboration with Al-Jawad Pike Architects. Designed by Al-Jawad Pike for Selfridges & Co. Precision in a listed interior.

millimetre were commissioned to make a new information desk for Selfridges’ Grade II listed entrance. The intention was clear. It needed to feel as though it had always belonged to the building. Cast silicon bronze was the only material that could deliver the depth, texture and permanence the architects envisioned.

We developed the full technical design, modelling every contraction through casting and welding, and building a lightweight aluminium frame to protect the historic marble floor. The bronze panels were cast by Mayberry Foundry, then welded back to a precise internal frame to keep each surface flat and true. Simon, our specialist bronze welder, led this with care. Heat was controlled. Seams were refined. The cast texture was reinstated through a sampling process developed in the workshop. A 3 mm internal radius was cast into each panel so adjoining pieces would meet seamlessly.

During production we adapted the patination process to achieve the right finish at the right pace. The final surface is durable, honest and true to the material.

The desk sits at the centre of the Beaux-Arts entrance with a quiet, timeless presence, defined by material honesty and the craft that makes it belong.
