The latest landmark on the Brighton skyline, the British Airways i360 is the world’s first vertical cable car and the world’s tallest moving observation tower. The so-called ‘vertical pier’ soars 450 feet above the seafront, giving visitors 360 degree views of a 26-mile radius from inside a glass viewing pod.
millimetre fabricated and installed a number of elements for the i360, including the Nyetimber Sky Bar in the viewing pod. The sleek curved bar, where visitors can buy drinks during their ‘flight’, consists of brushed aluminium worktops and shelves with a mirror-polished front and capping, a curved laminated glass screen with a white diffuser interlayer, and an LED strip. millimetre also created a mobile events bar for the i360 events programme, utilising the same materials, finishes and design aesthetic as the Sky Bar.
The thresholds where the lower and upper esplanades of the tower meet the stationary pod were made from a series of anodised aluminium barriers, with a laminated glass infill and mirror-polished stainless steel spigots and brackets, connecting back to the structure.
For the bathrooms, millimetre fabricated a series of doublesided, convex glass mirrors to go above the wash basins, with stainless steel legs, surrounds and base plates and a shot blasted finish.
