A Place Called Home
A Place Called Home, London Design Festival Landmark Project with Air BnB
Trafalgar Square, London
18 – 21 September 2014
What does ‘home’ mean? Four contemporary designers – Jasper Morrison, Patternity, Raw Edges and Studioilse – respond with four freestanding interiors, in collaboration with Air BnB. millimetre detailed each structure to house the design, then fabricated all four and installed them in Trafalgar Square.
Jasper Morrison’s ‘pigeon fancier’ cabin had exposed timber interiors with external perches and roosting boxes for the birds. Raw Edges’ mechanical interior required a movable system of walls and partitions to create three flexible rooms. Details included a showerhead that becomes a kitchen shelf. An interactive kaleidoscope in Patternity’s structure took photographs of visitors to appear on a screen in the gable. Studioilse’s emotional and sensory response to home involved film projections and live Twitter feeds.
