Crisis Homelessness Sculpture

Alex. Sculpture for Crisis with Creative Giants and Sophie De Oliveira Barata

Kings Cross, London. Bullring, Birmingham.

December 2023

Homelessness can’t be ignored any longer.

This is Alex. Commissioned by Creative Giants for Crisis UK. Advanced face mapping technology combined the features of 17 people experiencing homelessness for a 4.3 metre tall sculpture. Alex was fabricated in our workshop in Portslade and Sophie De Oliveira Barata’s workshop in Lewes.

The primary structure of the sculpture is a steel frame built up with a plywood form work. The form work for the head, hands and foot is expanded cork and timber which was machined using our 7-axis robot and then worked on ingeniously by Sophie. A team of brilliant textile and prop artists including Harriet Lansdown then worked on creating the painted fabric exterior.

Alex was positioned at Kings Cross, photographed here, before relocation to St. Martin’s Church at The Bullring in Birmingham.

Head to the Crisis website and let’s make homelessness impossible to ignore together. #cantbeignored
