Losing Myself
Níall McLaughlin Architects & Yeoryia Manolopoulou for Venice Architecture Biennale
Irish Pavillion, 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale
May 2016
millimetre collaborated with Niall McLaughlin Architects to produce this Irish Pavilion for the 15th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia. The project draws on ten years’ experience of designing buildings for people with dementia. It incorporates a mosaic of their conversations, drawings and stories, both in the installation and on a specially-designed website.
millimetre developed and fabricated 16 brass ‘quad pods’. We began by producing a prototype from mild steel. All elements were laser cut, folded and TIG welded where required. The tapered legs needed to be demountable for transportation, connecting cleats were manufactured to ensure that the feet of the ‘quad pods’ accurately aligned with the grid. The brass was polished to bright, then taken back to satin.
