Tarner Neighbourhood Benches for Brighton & Hove City Council

Brighton

October 2006

‘Rest Awhile On Your Journey’ is a unique, bright orange, wave shaped bench that was designed and manufactured by Brighton based designers & makers millimetre.

In 2006 millimetre won the Tarner Neighbourhood seating competition, we were commissioned by Brighton and Hove city council to design and manufacture a public bench/seating area. Our cantilevered water-cut plywood and steel bench was developed over several weeks in conjunction with feed-back from Tarner residents. The resulting design is ergonomic, fun, practical and durable.

The plywood profiles are held in place through compression, these profiles [once the fixings have been loosened], can be lifted allowing the profile of the bench to be subtly adjusted. The profiles can be quickly removed for repair or replacement. The bench is dedicated to the late Paul Hooker.
