V&A Cromwell Road Entrance
Victoria & Albert Museum Cromwell Road Entrance with Sam Jacob Studio
Victoria & Albert Museum, London
April 2022
As part of the redesign and refurbishment of the Victoria & Albert Museum, millimetre was awarded the bid to fabricate and install the Cromwell Road main entrance’s glass doors, designed by Sam Jacob Studio.
The new entrance to the museum consists of a 3.5m high enclosure which creates a spectacular three tier threshold for visitors to enter through. Each of the nine types of cassettes were prefabricated in our metal workshop over the winter and then assembled on site in January 2022.
Fabricated from thin mild steel flat bar, the frame encapsulates three sizes of borosilicate glass tubes within steel scallops. The cassettes are all thermally sprayed with aluminium bronze alongside a burnished and patinated finish.
