Copper staircase
Copper staircase with Make Architects
Private residence
October 2009
millimetre worked closely with Make Architects to develop the aesthetic and construction of this elegant bespoke staircase. The geometry was developed in Rhino and rendered visualisations brought together the approved materials and finishes. Challenging and highly technical elements, such as the pierced inner stringer and the copper cladding/spraying, showcase millimetre’s skilled craftsmanship and facilities.
The pierced, hand-finished, helically-rolled inner stringer is hot metal sprayed [copper], acid patinated and hard waxed. The oak handrail was produced using a five-axis router, using data from our model. The steel outer stringer is clad in 3mm copper with welded seams. The balustrade is 12mm thick, curved, low iron glass with a baked oak handrail. The convex spiralling soffit is composed of a timber lattice with a polished plaster finish.
