Room for London for Living Architecture
Queen Elizabeth Hall, London
December 2011
Teetering on the roof of the Queen Elizabeth Hall at London’s South Bank Centre, Room for London is a one-room hotel in boat form, inspired by Joseph Conrad’s vessel in The Heart of Darkness. As the main construction and installation contractor, millimetre worked closely with David Kohn Architects, developing the concept to achieve both the desired aesthetic and pragmatic requirements of the build.
The team undertook all 3D design work, used to inform the design and fabrication of the steel substructure, hull form and interior elements. millimetre’s meticulous attention to detail and niche expertise were required to navigate unique challenges of the project and successfully install the structure on the roof. The build was completed on deadline in six intensive days.
